Chennai: Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University bestowed Prof Dr. N. S. Sundaram with Life Time Achievement Award. This award was conferred by His Excellency Dr.K.Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu & Dr. Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. The award function was on 25th November 2011 at 6.30 p.m.
Dr. N.S. Sundaram was born on 26th January 1929. He was superintendent at Government Ophthalmic Hospital Egmore, Chennai. During his tenure at GOH, Chennai 9 special clinics were started (2 for cornea, 1 for lens, 2 for retina, 1 for genetics, 1 for uvea, 1 for orbit and laser. Special clinic on genetics was the first of its kind introduced by Government of Tamil Nadu. About 100 eye camps were conducted during his service under Government programmes. Conducted more than 100 eye camps under the banner of NGOs such as Lions Club, Sai trust, Kanchi Trust, VHERDS, NIVH etc. Eye Exhibitions on “Have an eye care” were held during the eye camps. He has covered 16 districts in Tamil Nadu where he has given lectures for 10 & 12th Standard students of various schools in that districts. NSS eye corner a permanent Exhibition is held at Science centre Birla Planetarium Chennai. He has written a book on Total Eye Care in Tamil and English. Which are more informative.
He performed 30000 cataract surgeries for poor individually & under his guidance about 150000 cataract surgeries were conducted. Refraction about 2 to 3 lakhs were done.
Prof. Dr. N.S. Sundaram is a very humble, sincere, soft spoken, unassuming man with low profile but a hard task master with a firm commitment and conviction to help the unfortunate poor, who were cursed with defective vision. He gives good advice and encourages the students to come up in their life.
He is mentor of Aditya Jyot Foundation for twinkling little eyes. The Aditya Jyot Foundation for Twinkling Little Eyes is a not-for-profit body, with out-reach programs aiming to redress the suffering of low income groups, marginalized population living in rural and urban slums and tribal areas in our state through free eye camps and free eye treatment. The main aim is to bring awareness among people regarding eye disorders and their early detection. Till date foundation have screened approximately 16400 children from various schools in Thane and Mumbai. The organization takes special interest in promoting eye donation. It runs a free daycare eye centre at Dharavi. Several eye screening camps for cataract are conducted under his guidance. NSS eye corner a permanent Exhibition is held at Dharavi in Marathi language.
Prof. Dr. N.S. Sundaram is the rector of Aditya Jyot Institute of Optometry. At the age of 85 he constantly strives to be updated. Institute is Recognized by YASHWANTRAO CHAVAN MAHARASHTRA OPEN UNIVERSITY, NASHIK. It is also Recognized Institute by the National Board of Examiners for Post- Doctoral Fellowship in Vitreo- Retinal Diseases.
His dream is to have his own OT for the poor and underprvileged public. He likes to do more and more services to the poor until his last breath.
Prof Dr. S. Natarajan received award on his behalf. Dr. S. Natarajan is the third generation Ophthalmologist did his MBBS from Chennai. In 1982 he completed his post graduation in Ophthalmology from Chennai & was trained as a Vitreo Retinal Surgeon, under Dr. S. S. Badrinath, at the Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. In year 1990, he took the decisive step of laying the foundation stone of Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital and has continued serving the institution in his capacity as Chairman & Managing Director, surgeon and guide to a large community of Vitreo Retinal Specialists. He is considered as one of the most proficient and high profile young surgeons involved in academics & innovations in his clinical practice and he has been honored with accolades from around the world. He has more than 27000 complicated vitreoretinal surgeries to his credit. He holds the record for the 1st sutureless vitrectomy in the Limca book of records.
