Ocular Trauma Society of India bestows Dr.S.Natarajan with the prestigious Air Marshal Dr. M. S. Boparai oration Award & felicitates Dr.P.Namperumalsamy for getting recognized in Times Magazine 100 most influential people list.


22 nd January, Mumbai: Dr. S. Natarajan, CMD (Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital) also a world renowned eye surgeon receives Air Marshal Dr. M. S. Boparai oration  on Saturday 22nd January 2011which is awarded by Ocular Trauma Society of India for his contribution in the field of Ophthalmology, outstanding work in the field of OCULAR TRAUMA.

The Ocular Trauma Society of India aims to promote and stimulate general advancement, education, prevention, management and research activities related to ocular trauma. Air Marshal Dr. M.S. Boparai is the patron (founder Member) of Ocular Trauma Society of India. He has held highest post in army & is instrumental in sensitizing army doctors to join Ocular Trauma Society of India. He is the guiding force. The Ocular trauma Society of India has instituted an ORATION AWARD in the name of Air Marshal Dr. M. S. Boparai which is given to Ophthalmologist who has done outstanding work in the field of OCULAR TRAUMA. This year Dr.S.Natarajan is the privileged one to get the award.

About Dr.S. Natarajan
Dr.S. Natarajan is the third generation Ophthalmologist he did his MBBS from Chennai. In 1982 he completed his post graduation in Ophthalmology from Chennai & was trained as a Vitreo Retinal Surgeon, under Dr. S. S. Badrinath, at the Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. In 1988 he joined the Taparia Institute of Ophthalmology, Bombay Hospital. He set up vitreo retinal department at Bombay Hospital & continued working there till 1990. In year 1990, he took the decisive step of laying the foundation stone of Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital and has continued serving the institution in his capacity as Chairman & Managing Director, surgeon and guide to a large community of Vitreo Retinal Specialists. He was one of the founder members of the Vitreo Retinal Society of India (VRSI) the umbrella organization for all the vitreo retinal specialists of the country.

He is considered as one of the most proficient and high profile young surgeons involved in academics & innovations in his clinical practice and he has been honored with accolades from around the world. He is a recipient of the American Academy achievement Award, Late Shri Sandeep Wagh Award, Gusi Peace Award, Indira Gandhi Sadbhavna Award, Lion’s Eye Specialist Award, Dr.F.P. Antia Oration Award & many more.

He believes in the maxim “If you rest, you will rust” & constantly strives to set new benchmarks, beating his own records. He has more than 25000 complicated vitreoretinal surgeries to his credit. He holds the record for the 1st sutureless vitrectomy in the Limca book of records. A man with a natural flair for leadership, he has served as the President Bombay Ophthalmic Association, President Maharashtra Ophthalmological Society & has trained more than 60 ophthalmologists to serve the community through his Leadership Development Program.

He has a deep sense of responsibility to the less fortunate in society & through his Aditya Jyot Foundation for Twinkling Little Eyes reaches out to the visually impaired people unable to afford treatment. Since the year 2006 more than 30,000 people have been screened for various eye diseases, more than 20,000 children screened for eye ailments, 2000 cataracts performed , all totally FREE!.

Dr. P. Namperumalsamy:
He is the first & only Ophthalmologist to get a rating from TIME Magazine in its annual list of 100 most influential people in 2010. His contribution - more than 3.6 million cataract surgeries to date through an army of ophthalmologists at Aravind Eye Care Hospitals since 1976. Out of the 100 most influential people, there are only 9 Indians and he stands tall at number 6.

He was Born In 1939 in Ambasamudram A Small village in Theni District, Tamilnadu, he obtained his degree in Medicine & Postgraduate degree In Ophthalmology From Madras And Madurai Universities He underwent Postgraduate Fellowship training For 4 Years In USA. He Is the Founding Member of the Govel Trust, which runs The Aravind Eye Hospitals and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology. He is at present The Chairman Emeritus of Aravind Eye Hospitals & President of Aravind Medical Research Foundation. Honoured with the Padmashree by the Govt. Of India, The Award Basket Includes Rustom Ranji Oration Gold Medal, Dr.Joseph Gnanadickam Memorial Gold Medal Oration, C.S. Reshmi Award, Most Outstanding Retinal Surgeon Of The Millennium, K.G.P Chidambaram Memorial Gold Medal Award, Health Care & Life Sciences Award & The List Continues……

He was the First to start the Low Vision Rehabilitation Centre at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai in 1967. The 1st to start The Retina & Vitreous Department in the Govt. Rajaji Hospital & later at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai which is the first of its kind in India. In 2002, he developed the Center of Relevance & Excellence in Diabetic Retinopathy (CORE) He initiated research studies in Basic & Immunological aspects in Ophthalmology including Stem Cell research for Ocular Surface disorders & Hereditary Eye Diseases.
